Extended warranties are usually very inexpensive and can save you thousands in the future.
Some can even cover extra costs that result, such as cost of food that spoils when your fridge dies.
It's simple and inexpensive to purchase extended warranties and one of the smartest ways to protect your investment.
Appliances
can be large, heavy and expensive. You probably don't have the special tools or expertise needed to fix them in a crisis. If you can spare a few thousand dollars without batting an eyelash for new
appliances
should they break tomorrow, don't buy a warranty. But if you're like most of us, protect yourself by purchasing inexpensive extended warranties when you buy a new product and save yourself big money in the long run.

Sorry to say it since I believe both units are the same with different brand names. But, our prior unit worked better. This one requires frequent lubrication to complete it's travel on the up-cycle. Other than that it works well.

So I watch a lot of home improvement shows, and I keep seeing episodes of Property Brothers where they go into the "before" house and these pop-up downdraft systems are talked about as being real pains in the butt and something that will be replaced. Then they do the remodel and they move the stove to a more traditional location with a hood.
During the build phase of our custom home I changed the location of the cooktop probably 5 times. Under the window, on the island, then back to the window...finally our builder said "make a final decision - we need the gas and water lines installed." So it remained in the island.
We're in an area that does not require a range hood, which is good because there was no way I was going to have a range hood in the middle of my island! Talk about disrupting my beautiful open concept design. The appliance store recommended the downdraft as an option, again not required, and after doing some research my husband decided he wanted it. I honestly didn't care on way or the other.
It's fine. It does what it's supposed to do. But it's loud. The KitchenAid dishwasher makes not a sound but this thing drowns out the TV and any conversation. I use it if I've got more than just one pot on the stove but I use it and put it back down pretty quick.

Working Great!
ScottDIY

This was a replacement for a Viking Downdraft that died after about 10 years of infrequent use. This new unit was the the closest match to the existing opening in the granite countertop. It still took some work, not a drop and go. BUT, the location of the gas line and vent in my house wouldn't allow the blower to be on the stove side. FORTUNATELY, the KitchenAid came equipped with the parts needed to mount it on the opposite side and three options for where the blower would vent. So it allowed me to make the cabinet adjustments to pull this off. Once i made the cabinet mods, it worked immediately. Perfectly.
Instructions were not great, in fact, darn right bad. But enough information I could make enough sense to figure it out.
My only complaint is that on some of the sheet screws, the manuf overtightened and stripped the hole. So I have a few screws that really don't secure a couple locations perfectly. So i had to use metal tape to make sure it created a tight seam and air didn't blow out.

We replace our prior 23 year old Thermidor cooktop with this. This updated cooktop cleans so much more easily. Easy peasy!! As usual it has all the convenience of the Thermidor brand and we assume the reliability we have always experienced before.

Unit works fairly well, but has a horrendous design flaw. If the filters are removed, the unit closes when the button is pressed, but then it doesnt come back up. You have to call and pay service man to dismantle the entire unit. KA is not worth it - pay a little more go with a better brand. Their customer service was as unreliable as their product.

Same issues as mentioned in other reviews. Had this downdraft for 2 years. Multiple repair visits. It does not go up all the way, squeaks up and down. Has to be pulled out manually. Button broke couple of times. Doesn't work for couple of months at a time without breaking down. DO NOT BUY.

Ridiculous Design
Disconcerted
3/14/2019
We installed our unit as part of a complete kitchen renovation. Cabinetry was custom designed to accommodate the unit and it has functioned as expected until recently. The problem we now have is that when a filter was removed for regular cleaning, the vent lowered to its closed position. There is no way to get the vent up again, as the switch won't operate without filters in place. It's absolutely ridiculous that the unit could lower without a filter when it is not designed to rise without one. I called Kitchenaid and they sent a local repair tech out but he said he's had very little experience with them and didn't know of a way to get it to rise without the filter in it; I now need to have it removed from the cabinet.
I like the way it works, the way it looks, the way it performs but none of that matters if it can't be used and is not cost effective due to repairs.

I bought a Black Stainless Kitchen from Bray and Scarf and I am very happy except one thing. The downdraft pop up vent (KXD4636YSS) cover is stainless steel. On your website under additional features it says it comes in colors to match counter tops and other appliances etc. I called your 800 number and was told it only comes in Stainless. Is your customer service rep correct or is the website.

Customer service fail
Matt B.
11/28/2018
I bought a telescoping downdraft three years ago. I admit that I did not purchase the extended warranty. Honestly, I figured it would be at least five years before anything went wrong. Mistake number one I guess. My wife had the vent raised in order to remove the filters and clean them. While she cleaned them, it decided to retract on its own. Now it won't come back up. No where in the manual under vent system care or troubleshooting does it mention an issue or fix for this. MIstake number two is believing that manufacturers want to do the right thing. It's easier I guess to stick to black and white procedures(one year manufacturer's warranty). Such as, charge me for a trip, and I'm assuming labor to simply get the thing back up to reinstall the filters. Apparently there is a microswitch(that word should scare you) that has to depressed by the filters for the unit to work. All seems so ridiculous. Sorry, not sorry for the long rant.

We bought this a month ago and did the install ourselves. This was to replace a Jenn Air unit that was a stove top with downdraft unit together. Directions were good and videos assisted with ease of install.
I did have to move the outward air inside the cabinet, but that is not unit related.
We have used the unit several times and really like the height and cfm. This sucks in steam from our 9" stock pot. This is so much better than the prior unit that was only burner high.
I cannot give this or any other downdraft unit a full 5 stars because they cannot do what an overhead system can. Compared to all the other units, this is definitely worth the price!

Unit does not stay in 'up' position
avocado man
5/5/2018
I bought this from a SEARS OUTLET in Miami for a good price. When trying to install it, we found out there were problems, resulting in a few service calls to the a technician who came to work on it and got it working. The problem we now have is that it won't stay in the 'up' position. It rises while pressing the button and then when it gets to the top it just drops back down again. From doing some research, this model seems to have issues with the 'arm', gears, and limit switches. I do agree with several others that have written reviews that the design is excellent, the look is clean and neat, it has a higher rise than most, and with all stainless filters, you can put them in the dishwasher. Another problem is that when you remove the filters, there is no way to 'lock' the vent in the 'up' position. So, when it drops, due to pulling out the filters, there is no way to get the vent up again, as the switch won't operate without filters in place.

Very, very expensive repairs!

We have spent almost $3000.00 on REPAIRS in the 7 years we've had this fan! If even the smallest amount of liquid boils over, the electronic circuitry blows and and needs to be replaced. It's boiled over 4 times and each repair is $700.00+. Our 10 ft granite island was custom cut to accommodate this fan. Our installers insist they followed the manufacturer's specifications.

We like the retractable vent system; however, the vent won't go up. The filter popped out after cleaning as the unit was going down. Now I can't raise the vent to put the filter back in. Electricity is going to the system. The manual says the system won't work without the filter engaging a microswitch and I can't raise it to put the filter back in.

Not great assembly
KitchenReno
3/1/2018
I was so disappointed after having the vent installed. It would go up and down but the fan would not turn on. Installer said that it wasn't the installation so I needed to call Kitchenaid. Repair appointment setup. After waiting 4 hrs - no show. Called Kitchenaid again. Repair company confirmed and this time kept me updated on the appointment time. Turns out that the switch for the vent was not connected! Really? You would think that the assembled unit would be tested before being packaged up and sent to a customer. I am cautiously optimistic now that the vent works. Maybe the rating will improve but for the amount that we spent on the unit, I expect quality assembly.

Better than no vent, but not great--when it works
Stevemac
2/10/2018
We purchased this unit when we remodeled our kitchen to avoid having a hood above the center island where our cooktop is located. The vent normally works decently but usually it won't exhaust smoke from cooking unless you're using the back burners. Unfortunately, we've also used in under a dozen times and now it won't retract. It's only a few months old so hopefully it will be an easy fix. Does not instill confidence at this point!

Downdraft is fantastic

Love the KitchenAid downdraft. For 30 years I have had an upper cabinet blocking the view to my family room. With the remodel I didn't want a range hood hanging down so we discovered the downdraft system. What a blessing. Press a button and it pops up and starts removing the steam from the cooktop. What a wonderful discovery! So glad we found it.

Looks great but....
6/11/2017
So we purchased this brand new and have used it, not everyday, but for the past 4-6 weeks. We're trying to be good by keeping the filters clean. The last time we took them out, the downdraft descended on its own. No where in the manual does it tell you how to troubleshoot an occurence like that. We called kitchenaid and they sent out a technician. He tried all he could by checking the breaker, and unplugged the unit to get it ro reset. Nothing happened. He in turn ordered a bunch of parts in anticipation of replacing. This was on Saturday, we're waiting for the parts to come in. Like I stated earlier, this was brand new. This shouldn't be happening already. If anything, I should be thrilled it's still under warranty. I hope whatever the technician does, we will never have issues again for at least 10 years!

Mostly works but had an issue or two, the first fixed under warranty in the first year, the second I recently heard from the repair company the these things are junk. It's a 1.5-2 hour job to remove it and replace the switch that frequently fails. In short, the wow factor is there but the quality/reliability is not.

A definite improvement over my 26 year old builder-installed KitchenAid downdraft system. Sleek looks and MUCH quieter. Not sure any of these downdraft systems are a true replacement for actual vent hoods, but given my kitchen configuration it's all I can have.
